Miles to KM Converter

Miles to kilometers for pace, trips, and maps.

What this does

Converts miles to kilometers live as you type. The factor is exact — 1 mile = 1.609344 km — so a quick rule of thumb is "add 60%": 10 miles is about 16 km, 50 miles about 80 km.

Everyday mile distances in kilometers

  • 1 mile = 1.609 km — the classic track race, just over 4 laps
  • 3 miles = 4.83 km — a touch under a 5K
  • 26.2 miles (marathon) = 42.16 km
  • 60 mph = 96.6 km/h — why US speed limits feel oddly low in metric
  • 240 miles ≈ 386 km — a typical EV's advertised range, US-spec

How do I convert running pace from min/mile to min/km?

Divide the pace by 1.609 — pace is time per distance, so it shrinks where distance grows. An 8:00 min/mile pace is 8 ÷ 1.609 ≈ 4:58 min/km. (Divide the minutes as a decimal: 8.0 ÷ 1.609 = 4.97 min = 4 min 58 s.)

Why do the US and UK still use miles?

Road infrastructure, mostly. Both countries signed up to metric in trade and science decades ago, but replacing every road sign, speedometer assumption, and legal definition was judged not worth the cost — so driving distances stayed imperial while nearly everything else (medicine, food labels, engineering) went metric. Hence the constant need for this conversion.

Is a nautical mile the same thing?

No — a nautical mile is 1.852 km, about 15% longer than a statute mile, defined as one minute of latitude. Aviation and shipping use it. If that's what you need, the full unit converter includes nautical miles and knots.
